Back-Up Options for Your Holiday Snaps

with No Comments

When making some rather strong cases for why it’s important to back-up data, most people tend to put “because you could lose all your photos” as one of the least important reasons. If you’re a little bit more of a serious photographer though and you’ve been plunged into depression a couple of times after that perfect pic you snapped, following hours of positioning and repositioning your tripod stand, magically disappeared from your device or got corrupted somehow, I think “because you could lose all your photos” is perhaps the most important reason you’d want to take back-up more seriously. But even if you’re merely a traveller or a travel blogger – you essentially have only one opportunity available to you to take certain pictures in a certain setting or destination.

The low-light conditions over a certain misty water-body, in a faraway place could make for a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity, for example and if you lose that one golden pic, will that compel you to have a more serious approach to your back-up efforts? For those who are all too familiar with this sad, sad story of losing a golden pic or more, nobody can blame you for suddenly becoming a compulsive back-up synchroniser. Having it happen to you once is one too many times, so you have a couple of options to feed your compulsive need to back up your holiday snaps, or any other photos you regularly shoot.

Wi-Fi Camera

A fine example of the evolution of technology with the aim of addressing a very real and practical need, Wi-Fi cameras are becoming more and more accessible. In fact, some eager photographers and general gizmo-heads would go as far as rendering a digital camera outdated if it’s released without Wi-Fi capabilities. Either way, a Wi-Fi camera is a great way to back up your photos immediately as you take them, synching them with your cloud storage account as one option, while the other being pushing them to your computer’s hard-drive.

Wi-Fi SD Card

For those cameras which cost you too much money to be rendered obsolete on the grounds that they’re not Wi-Fi capable, a Wi-Fi SD card effectively turns these cameras into Wi-Fi cameras. Instant back-up is available in the same way that a Wi-Fi camera allows you to secure your holiday snaps. Configuring Wi-Fi SD cards seems to pose quite a few challenges though, but they’re nothing a little fiddling around and Googling won’t ultimately help to overcome. Just ensure to have the latest firmware installed on any digital devices into which you plug the Wi-Fi SD card.

SD Card

A standard SD card is perhaps the easiest way to back up your holiday snaps. Simply save all the pics you take on the digital camera’s onboard memory and then just copy everything to the SD card. This way you always have two copies of each pic and while the space available to store your images may run out quickly, you’ll just have to get used to sorting, moving and storing your snaps with increased regularity, so as to periodically free up more space on the device and on the SD card.
